Angelos

Great Western, however, was actually built for the transatlantic trade, and its crossing began the regular sailing of powered vessels across the Atlantic. The largest paddle-steamer ever built was Brunel's Great Eastern, but it also had an additional screw propulsion and sail rigging. In 1839, John Ericsson introduced the screw-propeller design onto a ship which then sailed over the Atlantic Ocean in 40 days. Mixed paddle and propeller designs were still being used at this time (vide the 1858 SS Great Eastern). .
. In 1848 the British Admiralty held a tug of war contest between a propeller driven ship the Rattler and a paddle wheel ship the Alecto. The propeller won, towing the Alecto stern first at a speed of 2.8 knots, but it was not until the early 20th century that paddle propelled vessels were entirely superseded. The propeller replaced the paddles due to efficiency, compactness, less complex mechanicals and reduced probability of damage. http://www.answers.com/topic/propeller-1 . Angelos
Την ιστορια την ηξερα παρόλαυτα για τις αναγκες του quiz μια απλη πηγη με ολη την ιστορια ειναι η ακολουθη SCREW VERSUS PADDLEHere displayed is the screw or propeller of the former sloop H.M.S. RATTLER, a vessel of around 800 tons and 200 H.P. This sloop in 1845 decided the future propulsion of British warships in a series of experiments against another sloop H.M.S. ALECTO of similar displacement and horse power but propelled by paddle wheels. On an 80 mile course in calm weather the RATTLER defeated the ALECTO by 23½ minutes. Later over a 60 mile course against a hard sea the RATTLER again defeated the paddle driven ALECTO, this time by 40 minutes. Finally, in the most conclusive experiment of all when the two ships, being fastened stern to stern, and both steaming their best, the RATTLER towed the ALECTO away at a rate of 2½ knots. In consequence, from 1845 onwards, new warships were driven by propellers. http://www.memorials.inportsmouth.co.uk/dockyard/rattler.htm
