A new era in the traditional traffic between Norway and Denmark

Color Line have today concluded an agreement with Aker Finnyards for the building of two new ships for delivery in 2007 and 2008. These ships represent completely new and forward looking transport solutions and will operate between Norway and Denmark in a new concept entitled «Color Line Superspeed». The agreement is valued at approx. NOK 2 billion (Euro 252 million).

In the time ahead, Color Line will be investing massively in new cruise and transport concepts. From 2004 to 2008 the company plans to invest NOK 7.5 billion in order to position themselves to meet future market requirements.

With the Superspeed concept, Color Line enters a new era in the traditional seaborne traffic between Norway and Denmark. These new ships will both increase accessibility and will shorten the distance to the rest of Europe. Superspeed are ships of the future which will carry a large number of passengers, cars and freight quickly and efficiently to and from the Continent.

Fast and environmentally efficient transport solutions

The new ships will be put into operation on the Kristiansand – Hirtshals service in December 2007 and on the Larvik – Hirtshals service in April 2008. The ships will have a length of 211 metres and will be able to accept a 2 km long line of trailers in addition to 1.800 passengers. The crossing between Kristiansand and Hirtshals will take three hours and fifteen minutes. Between Larvik and Hirtshals the crossing will take three hours and fourty five minutes. The size and speed of these ships thus represents an enormous increase in capacity between Norway and Denmark.

«The background for this commitment is the increasing requirement for fast and efficient transport solutions between Norway and the Continent» says CEO Trond Kleivdal in Color Line.

The new concept provides opportunities for combining sailing schedules in order to meet seasonal transport requirements. «This will involve major challenges for our ports. We are jointly in the process of finding good solutions to these challenges» says Trond Kleivdal.

Hirtshals is a key port for Color Line and an efficient link-up with the European motorway network. A four lane motorway to this port was opened in 2004. «Both Norway and the EU have clearly stated that the answer to Europe's future transport requirements must be found in the transfer of freight from road transport to seaborne and rail transport. In recent years for example the freight volume transported by Color Line ships has increased by approx. 10% annually. The investments and developments in Hirtshals port are thus an important step both for our company and for Norway as a whole», says CEO Trond Kleivdal in Color Line.

Strengthening of travel and tourism in Norway and Denmark.

The new ships will not have cabins and will therefore represent a major growth potential for the land based tourist industries in Norway and Denmark. «Popular winter destinations will be regarded as local facilities for large groups of the population on Jutland, for example in Aalborg and Århus», says Trond Kleivdal.
