Car carrier fire contained

4/4/2005

THE fire aboard the 45,000gt pure car and truck carrier Aniara was contained evening and the vessel has now been towed to a sheltered location away from shipping lanes.

Salvors from Smit were able to board the vessel 20 n-miles of Piraeus in Greece and attach a tow line. Further inspections of the vessel are expected today. The vessel suffered an engine fire which was reported at 1300GMT.

The crew of 23 Filipinos and 1 Singaporean were airlifted from the vessels after attempts to extinguish the fire failed.

Wallenius, owners and managers of the 1977-built vessel, have said that there has been no injuries or pollution caused by the incident.

Stricken car carrier stable

5/4/2005

An elderly Wallenius Lines car carrier abandoned by its crew following an engine room fire is stable and in no danger of sinking but its future may still be uncertain.

The fire on the 5,700 vehicle capacity Aniara is out and the ship has been connected to tugs by salvors Smit.

But the 15,406-dwt PCTC Aniara (built 1977) is an old vessel that has been laid up in the past and one that Wallenius was tempted to decommission for conversion into floating university

accommodation four years ago.

So the future of the Aniara crucially depends on the extent of fire damage which is currently unknown as the engine compartment is sealed.

The 24 strong crew abandoned the Aniara after their attempts to extinguish the fire, which included flooding the engine room with carbon dioxide, failed.

Smit who have been contracted on a Lloyd’s Open Form 2000 basis said the Aniara had been towed to a sheltered location about 35 nautical miles south east of Piraeus for a detailed inspection to be conducted.

Emergency generators on board have been successfully started providing light and power for on board fire fighting equipment should it be needed.

Stockholm based Wallenius promised a full investigation into the fire and said the crew and all involved in the emergency had acted with acted with great professionalism.

The vessel was carrying a cargo of cars from Chennai to Piraeus when fire broke out. The hull of the vessel is insured by Trygg-Hansa with protection and indemnity cover provided by the UK Club.

Και μια μικρή σύνοψη από τους «salvors»: SMIT Salvage

"Aniara"

31th March - 10th April 2005

Car carrier suffers a fire in the engine room.

The Korean car carrier ‘Aniara’, laden with 4.300 cars, caught fire in the engine room during her stay in Piraeus, Greece. SMIT salvage launched immediately a fire fighting operation. After an extremely successful operation the damage was less than feared as result of the professional and immediately interference of the salvors. Only a small part of the cars were damaged, mainly caused due the smoke. This was a real fire fighting operation. The whole operation took place at a very exposed location at sea and only took ten days.

Και τέλος, ας δούμε την αναλυτική εξέλιξη της υπόθεσης σύμφωνα με το Salvage report του Lloydsagency
