Reducing CO2 emissions from ships has a high environmental priority for the shipping industry. Germanischer Lloyd demonstrates the availability and functionality of a CO2-index for shipping: The classification society has launched a prototype CO2-index, based on MEPC/Circ.471. The innovative index is available for all GL classed ships. Each ship owner and management company can check the complete survey status of their GL classed fleet.

The CO2 emission will be measured on the basis of installed power, consumed fuel and transported cargo. Computed index values can be compared to other ships' indices and eventually be used to minimise emissions from transport. The CO2-index tool by GL can be used today to record fuel consumption, transported cargo and distance between two

consecutive ports. With carbon emission factors specified by IMO, the CO2-index is calculated for each voyage and later averaged for a still to be defined period (a year might be practical). At the end of the period, a GL surveyor will check the recorded data and eventually issues - on behalf of a flag state - a certified CO2-index which is then valid

for the next period.

If data for more than one vessel is entered into the online tool - visible for the owner and manager of a particular vessel or fleet – a comparison of CO2-indices across a fleet is possible. This function in particular is expected to trigger a learning effect as differences in fuel consumption will be made explicit and more transparent with the data associated to each vessel and voyage segment. With certified CO2-index values becoming public, the transport industry can actively further minimize emissions. Ships with a low index will transport more cargo and improve their index even further.

Germanischer Lloyd conducts the safety surveys on board of more than 6,500 ships with about 73 Mio GT. 126 flag states have authorized GL to perform statutory duties. Germanischer Lloyd also covers all other ship types such as

tanker, bulker, multi purpose vessels, high speed ferries and cruise ships. The current newbuilding orderbook contains about 1,750 vessels with over 33 Mio GT.
