Ships Collide In Newark Bay; Fluid Leaks

NEW YORK -- Three ships collided shortly before 2 p.m. in Newark Bay on Thursday, according to the Coast Guard.

An unknown fluid has leaked out of one of the ships and into the bay.

A 669-foot ship collided with two dredge ships in the bay, according to the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard spokesman said the 669-foot ship involved in the crash was carrying orange juice, but it was not leaking from the vessel, known as the Orange Sun.

However, some hydraulic fuel has spilled and left a sheen on the frigid waters.

No injuries have been reported.

Coast Guard officials said the bay will remain closed indefinitely.

NEWARK, N.J. -- A 669-foot ship carrying orange juice collided Thursday with a dredging vessel in Newark Bay. No one was hurt, but a small amount of hydraulic fluid leaked into the frigid water.

The freighter, called the Orange Sun, and a dredging vessel carrying seven people collided just before 2 p.m. A third vessel got out of the way just in time, said Coast Guard spokesman Seth Johnson.

As a precaution, five people were evacuated from the dredging vessel, which was taking on water, and two remained on board, officials said.

The Orange Sun was on its way to a nearby pier, being escorted by two tug boats, at the time of the collision, Johnson said.

Newark Bay, a narrow strip between Bayonne and Newark, was closed indefinitely.
