The 404 foot 1996-built Hurtigrute vessel NORDKAPP stranded on a submerged embankment near Deception Island in the South Shetland archipelago with 296 passengers today. Sister ship NORDNORGE has arrived to transfer the stranded passengers back to Ushuaia, Argentina, awaiting smoother seas for the tendering process. There were no injuries and the NORDKAPP is reportedly in no danger of sinking. She will be escorted to back to Argentina by a British warship, which will also provide divers to conduct a survey of her hull damageThe hull of Hurtigute's NORDKAPP was examined by divers from British Navy's Antarctic ice patrol and survey ship HMS ENDURANCE (ex POLAR CIRCLE) while she sits at anchor in Maxwell Bay, King George Island, near the Chilean Marsh/Frei research station. Resulting from her grounding, at Neptune's Bellows near Deception Island on January 30, the ship is reported to have an approximately 2 foot hole in her hull. The ship was cleared to sail to Argentina for repairs, but Hurtigruten management has arranged for initial repairs to made on site. A diving repair team is expected to arrive February 3, in the meantime booms encircle the ship incase of leaks. Following a temporary fix, the ship will sail for Buenos Aires for permanent repairs. The three remaining cruises on NORDKAPP's Antarctic season have been cancelled
