06-04-2007 - Tourists evacuated from listing Greek ship

ATHENS - Hundreds of German and U.S. tourists were being evacuated from a Greek cruise ship that ran aground near the Aegean Sea island of Santorini with about 1,200 passengers aboard, authorities said on Thursday. The Greek-registered Sea Diamond was listing half a nautical mile from the island and a mass operation was under way to rescue passengers and crew.

"At least 600 people have been brought to the shore so far. It could take minutes or it could hours to complete the operation but no one is hurt so far," a coast guard official on the island told Reuters.

The 22,412-tonne ship, which can carry 1,355 people, suffered a hull breech when it ran aground about one minute away from the shore of the picturesque island, he said.

"The ship had about 1,500 people aboard, including the crew. Most of the tourists were foreigners, Germans and Americans," said an official at Louis Cruise Lines, which runs the ship.

The Sea Diamond left the port of Piraeus on Monday for a five-day island cruise and was due back to Greece's main port on Friday, officials said.

Local officials said a helicopter, military planes and fishing boats have rushed to the scene to help with the operation.

"For the time being there is no danger," the coast guard official said.

10-04-2007 - Greek cruise ship captain blames sea currents for sinking

ATHENS— A cruise ship captain indicted on negligence charges after his vessel sank in the Aegean Sea blamed strong currents for the accident, state-run television reported Sunday.

Two French tourists have been missing since Thursday when the ship struck rocks and eventually sank off the island of Santorini. All the other people on board — 1,154 passengers and 391 crew, according to operator Louis Cruise Lines — were rescued.

State-run NET television quoted from what it said were excerpts of his deposition to a public prosecutor on the island of Naxos, blaming currents off the volcanic island for the accident.

"I felt the ship, which had been on a normal course, slip to the right because of sea currents," NET quoted him as saying. "I gave the order for a full turn left. But there was not enough time for the ship to respond."

The captain was indicted along with five other crewmembers on blanket charges of causing a shipwreck through negligence, breaching international shipping safety regulations and polluting the environment, the Cyclade islands public prosecution office said. All have been released pending further testimony.

Most of the ship's passengers were American, but also included groups from Canada, Spain, France, Australia, and The Dominican Republic.

The missing passengers were identified as Frenchman Jean-Christophe Allain, 45, and his 16-year-old daughter, Maud.

Efforts to search the vessel for them were set to resume Tuesday, with the help of a remote controlled undersea probe which will be used to examine the vessel more than 300 feet underwater.

Captain charged

The Greek captain of the 22,412-gt Sea Diamond (built 1986) has been charged with causing a shipwreck through negligence.

The Sea Diamond slips beneath the wavesBut he has denied the charge and has blamed strong currents for the disaster that has left two passengers missing.

Authorities have not named the captain who also faces charges of breaching international shipping safety regulations and polluting the environment.

Five crewmen have also been questioned by police, but there are conflicting reports as to whether they have also been charged.

Meanwhile, Greek authorities have announced plans to sue the ships owners over fears that pollution from the sunken vessel could damage the local tourist economy.

“We feel it is our obligation to take legal action,” said island governor Chrysanthos Roussos.

“We need to ensure that the shipʼs owners take responsibility for the clean-up operation,” he said.

The Sea Diamond sank off the Greek island of Santorini early on Friday after hitting a charted reef the previous day.

Most of the ships 1,500 passengers were American, but also included groups from Canada, Spain, France, Australia and the UK.

This is the second incident involving a cruiseship owned by the Greek operator, Louis Hellenic Cruises, in just under a year.

In May last year Louisʼ 11,162-gt ferry Calypso (built 1967) suffered an engine room fire in the English Channel and had to be towed to safety.
