Lately I have been reading various reports in the English-language press about the Manxman . Or rather about IOMSP and how the ship is being operated. Not to mention, the Unions have been boycotted because the seafarers, according to their words, are under psychological pressure "not to become P & O ", if they do not accept some of the things their employer is asking for. I haven't been able to find out exactly what, but anyway there is a lot of talk and movement around this company and the ship.

The company is seeking to change the crewing arrangements to "live-on-board" two weeks on/two weeks off. So it would be to move in line with almost every other major ferry operator around the UK but obviously a big change if crews are used to going ashore and seeing family every day.

It really is nothing like the P&O situation... the Steam Packet is now controlled by the Isle of Man government and I find it highly unlikely they would do anything like what P&O did. The discussion between the union and the company is now playing out in the press which is not going to be helpful unless it is just grandstanding by the union to get the best deal.

A very small observation in relation to his older photos that we have in the gallery , is also that if one notices a little behind where his name is written on the bow, a small logo has been added. I can not understand what it is, something like a teddy bear depicts; I imagine it refers to some charity that Tallink supports.

I think it is the Official Carrier of the Moomins logo that the other Silja ships have.

  3. I think these are cabins for crew.

Ironically the final area of passenger cabins in Viking Line service was originally an upper car deck!

If ASL wanted to do some work to increase vehicle capacity it would presumably not be too structurally difficult to reinstate that upper car deck and use what had become crew cabins for passenger use. And then try and squeeze the crew into other areas.

    Apologies for writing in English.

Whether the ship is really suitable or not for a genuine Western Cyclades operation is indeed questionable. But it does not have so many cabins any more. Those beneath the vehicle deck were removed some years ago and in final Viking Line configuration only half a deck was made available for passenger use with two full decks of accommodation above. Here is the final VL deckplan

  5. A very interesting observation, but I can't find any evidence for such a thing existing in real life so perhaps it was a form of "artistic licence". I don't know about the Sifnos Express but the Kapetan Alexandros had something similar in her final years (see picture) but this was certainly a later safety addition.

This is a picture of the vehicle deck of the Cerdic Ferry as built with no sign of any bulkhead. However the photographer may be standing in front of it 😂

This is another image on one of the ASN ships, I'm not sure which, but again a clean layout.

I do not have a GA plan for this ship (I have a First Class accommodation plan though :) ). But the GA of the earlier Bardic Ferry (later Nasim II) again suggests nothing like this - but there is indication of a small central support for the crane.

The Scottish Maritime Museum on Flickr has some nice images of this ship being built.

  6. Great review Nikos.

The Rhapsody is a real delight, although I imagine she was less so for the accountants at SNCM who simply couldn't operate her profitably.

I imagine when she sank herself in Marseille harbour and they got an insurance payout they couldn't  believe their luck. In fact I can visualise them sneaking down to the quayside and setting her loose in that gale themselves.

GNV probably have a better balance of tourists vs freight on the peak season passenger-oriented service they use her for - and of course they picked her up for virtually scrap value.

Otherwise 167 meters long, 23.4 meters wide and 6 meters deep. The ship looks like a roll but it is not, it accepts a small number of passengers and cars, one can travel with it if booked. In total I see it having 57 cabins and a total of 114 beds for passengers and truck drivers. Total capacity of 156 trucks in 2,040 linear meters, as our friend Matt .

We can play spot the difference as I now have one also from the Norbank 😄
