Structural Failure, break in two and sinking of Containership MOL Comfort

Recommended Posts

The loading of the containers on board may have exacerbated the situation.  Although the loading of the containers appears even in the photo, the weight distribution of the containers may not have been even.  Had heavier containers been loaded on the bow and stern and lighter ones in the center of the ship, the vessel may have been placed in a hogging situation before she even set sail.  It’s speculation of course to say one way or another, but assuming that she met class requirements, it’s one possible explanation for what happened.

Muscat: Maritime experts in the region are examining all options to salvage the 4,382 containers on board the MOL Comfort, which split into two parts some 430 nautical miles southeast of Salalah last week.

The 8,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) container ship, which is insured for ¥7.9 billion (approximately OMR31 million), suffered a fractured hull on the morning of June 18 while sailing from Singapore to North Europe via Jeddah.

According to Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), which owns MOL Comfort, a patrol boat and three salvage tugboats had located the separated sections of the stricken ship last Monday.

In its e-mail update since the incident, MOL remarked that the fore and aft parts were "adrift in the Indian Ocean, near 015º12´N, 066º53´E and 013º38´N, 064º10´E, and were heading in an east–northeast direction".

"The weather at the site remained adverse. Most of the cargo is still on board the two sections, but some containers were lost or damaged during the incident," the e-mail stated.

"Some of the containers were lost, but most of the cargo is confirmed to be aboard the fore and aft sections. We have contracted a salvage company and are proceeding to salvage the cargo and hulls.

One patrol boat and three tugboats arrived at the site on June 24. One more boat is expected to arrive today (Wednesday), and all five boats will prepare for the salvage operation," the update added.

Since the engines will not be working, it will be quite difficult to tow the two parts to a nearby port.

The ship was deployed on Loop 1 of the G6 alliance and was heading west when the incident occurred.

Commenting on the break-up of the MOL Comfort, a senior official at Salalah Port said,

"The incident is of great concern. This is the first time that a container ship of this size, heavily laden with cargo, has broken in two. The experts are examining all possibilities."

When asked about bringing the cargo to Salalah Port, the official noted that this may be one of the options.

According to the vessel owners, "no oil film has formed around the vessel".

Investigation
They have started an investigation into the cause of the incident together with the shipbuilder, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

"Although the cause of this incident has not yet been identified, MOL, together with MHI and the classification society (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, ClassNK), is arranging an inspection of all six sister vessels as quickly as possible.

This inspection is in addition to the one conducted by the crew during navigation. MOL has also introduced operational precautions to reduce the stress on the hull as an interim contingency plan," the vessel owners said.

26-member crew
The 26-member crew, including 11 Russians, one Ukrainian, and 14 Filipinos, were rescued by another vessel in the area.

According to shipping-building industry experts, the damage can be attributed to basic design and building flaws, a serious imbalance in the weight of the loaded containers due to false cargo weight declarations, and a faulty cargo plan or faulty ballasting in the container ship.

TOKYO- Mitsui O.S.K. Lines reports the aft part of the containership MOL Comfort sank in the open sea near 14 26N 066 26E (water depth about 4,000m) at 16:48 JST (11:48 Dubai time) on June 27. About 1,700 containers aboard the aft part sank with this section of the vessel. Some are confirmed floating near the site. About 1,500 metric tons of fuel oil was estimated to be aboard in the tanks of the aft part. No large volume of oil leakage is confirmed at this moment.

As of 23:00 JST (18:00 Dubai time) on June 26, 2013, the fore section was in position 15 52N 068 53E.

Maritime Bulletin:

The fore section is or supposed to be, under tow, latest AIS of the tugs working on fore section show course almost due north, speed some 1.5 knots – probably tugs are just keeping fore section at a most safe angle towards sea and wind.

Following the MOL Comfort incident, MOL has decided to withdraw the ship’s six sister vessels — MOL Creation, MOL Charisma, MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, MOL Competence and MOL Commitment — from service as a preventative measure and to upgrade their hulls.

The carrier said that alough they have sufficiently fulfilled the safety standard required by classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, in compliance with the International Association of Classification Societies, MOL plans to upgrade the hull structures to be twice as strong as the required safety standard

MOL, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and ClassNK are continuing to investigate the cause of the MOL Comfort incident, although MOL said the investigation “may take some time.”

JAPAN’s Mitsui OSK (MOL Lines) reports that the still floating front end of the 8,000-TEU MOL Comfort has been reconnected to the salvage tug from which broke free in adverse weather conditions.

“The tow wire was disconnected from the fore part on July 1, but recovery work was complete and we have resumed towing operation,” said the latest MOL communique. “Our sales offices will continue to contact customers with updates on the movement of the fore part and cargo status.”

The ship split in two on June 17 off the coast of Oman and Yemen on its way front Singapore to Jeddah. As both ends of the ship separated and wallowed in the monsoon downpour, the rear end, containing the wheelhouse, 1,700 containers and 1,500 tonnes of bunker sunk on June 27.

Three tugs will resume towing the forward section, with most of its containers still aboard in a west-northwest direction from 17’02″N 67’57″E.

The salvage company has a patrol boat where the after section sank and keep an eye out for oil leaks, but none has been reported so far. The company intends to recover the two hull sections, said MOL.

MOL has since withdrawn the MOL Comfort’s six sister ships from service to examine causes and strengthen their hulls before they put to sea again.

Muscat: The fire on the fore section of the stricken MOL Comfort boxship continues to rage for a fourth straight day with neither the appointed salvage team, Smit, nor the Indian Coast Guard able to douse it.

A fire broke out from the rear end of the fore part of the 7,000 teu ship on July 6, and one tug boat and two rescue boats responded to the fire. On top of these three boats, the salvage company requested the assistance of the Indian Coast Guard for fire fighting, and their patrol boat Samudra Prahari with an external fire fighting system, arrived at the scene early on July 8, and started fire fighting with the others immediately.

“However, due to adverse weather, the work has not been progressing smoothly and the fire is not yet under control.

Observations show that many containers on the deck have been burnt out,” the ship’s owner Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan said in a release today.

The MOL Comfort split in two on June 17 200 nautical miles off Yemen with the stern section sinking 10 days later.  [09/07/13]

The fire on the derelict vessel, which has been on since Sunday, is still spreading. The vessel, which is situated 390 nautical miles from Mumbai’s coast has been tugged deeper into the sea.

The cause of concern is that most of the containers hold hazardous and noxious substances (HNS), making it extremely dangerous to tow the ship towards the coast for fire-fighting operations.

The MOL Comfort sinking and its wider industry concerns

As a shipping journalist it was with some sadness that I read email update number 24 from Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) on the MOL Comfort casualty on Thursday morning. It was the not unexpected news that the fore section of the broken boxship, which had been burning for five days, had sunk to the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

For three weeks we had been following the unfurling drama of the MOL Comfort accident here on www.seatrade-global.com. Daily updates had been hugely well read by many thousands of people and clearly we were not the only ones in shipping eager to know what would happen next.

However, on a more serious level the fire on, and subsequent loss of, the last part of the MOL Comfort will hugely hamper investigations into how the five-year old containership broke its back in heavy weather and later split apart.

Had attempts to tow both, or even one section of the broken ship, to Oman been successful it would have provided investigators with large amounts of evidence to analyse. As it stands though, despite the heroic attempts of the salvors in clearly very difficult conditions, the two halves of the wreck now lie thousands of metres down on the ocean floor.

While we do not doubt the skills of ClassNK and the Japanese government authorities, as well as Lloyd’s Register, who have been appointed independently by MOL to find the cause of the accident, with no actual physical evidence to work with apart crew accounts and photos it will be an extremely difficult, if not impossible task.

Indeed ClassNK has already said that in view of the “unfortunate circumstances” it will now likely complete its preliminary investigations by September.

But knowing why this accident occurred is of major importance to the shipping industry as a whole. It brings into question the issue of whether the structural standards of large containerships are good enough to stand the potential rigours they face on the world’s oceans. Lessons learned could also be applied to other ship types, making shipping overall a safer industry. There have also been suggestions that overweight containers, not declared as such, could have been the root cause of the casualty.

Whatever the reason, the loss of the entire vessel is a blow not just to MOL, cargo owners and investigators, but the industry as whole in its ongoing quest for safer shipping.

As part of the ongoing investigation, a review of the MOL Comfort’s design as well as the plan approval process was completed earlier this month. This review, ClassNK said in a release on July 5, has verified the results of the plan approval process, and confirmed that the vessel design fully complied with all requirements of the ClassNK rules and IACS regulations.

A similar review of the vessel’s survey records has also been completed, and confirmed that the special survey of the five year-old vessel completed on 29 May this year was carried out in full compliance with the regulations and guidance for special surveys. The review also verified that no abnormalities were observed during the special survey.

Under the leadership of Toshitomo Matsui who is EVP of ClassNK , the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team is carrying out a strict and exhaustive investigation of the causes of the MOL Comfort casualty.ClassNK proceeds promptly with the analysis work, and advance findings are expected by early September 2013.

Based on the current findings of the ongoing investigation and analysis, the ClassNK Casualty Investigation Team has revealed that the damage leading to the loss of the container ship MOL Comfort didn't originate from the ship's upper deck area or hatch side coaming. As a preventative safety step, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) have made plans to further increase the hull strength of the sister ships of the sunken MOL Comfort. Those plans have been approved by ClassNK and updates are provided via the ClassNK website.Measures taken to strengthen the hulls of MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, and MOL Creation were recently accomplished and those ships return to Asia-North Europe service starting at 10th of August.
