Indonesia gets tough on ferries

71421_01.jpgThe Indonesian government will set an age limit for ferries imported to the country.

"The maximum age is 20 years to better guarantee safety in sea transport in the country", shipping and maritime director Abdul Gani said.

The plan, however, is still being discussed with the land transport directorate general as the licensing agency.

Gani warned, however, that an age limit alone would not guarantee greater safety, adding the seaworthiness of a ship depended very much on the maintenance and quality of the vessel.

The country currently has 44 passengerships and 33 coastal vessels which are more than 20 years old.

In October, at least 31 people died after the Acita 3 ferry capsized and sank off the southern coast of Sulawesi island.

In February at least 42 bodies were recovered after the 1,800-gt Levina 1 (built 1981) caught fire near Jakarta.

And in December 2006, the 2,170-gt Senopati Nusantra (built 1982) went down between Borneo and Java, with more than 400 passengers reported missing.
