April 2nd, 2017 11:54 GMT A Polaris Shipping-owned very large ore carrier (VLOC) is believed to have broken in two before sinking off Uruguay with 24 crew members onboard. The Uruguayan navy cited a text from a crew member on Friday as saying the 266,000-dwt Stellar Daisy (built 1993) was taking on water and breaking up. A merchant vessel rescued two men in a life raft from the Polaris-owned bulker, but searches were continuing on Monday for 22 more missing men. The VLOC was carrying a load of iron ore from Brazil to China when the crew issued a distress call reporting that the vessel was taking on water about 3,700 kilometres from Uruguay's coast. The ship had six South Koreans and 18 Filipinos onboard, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap. Rescuers said on Monday they had made little progress in finding survivors. "The more hours pass, the less the chances are of finding them," Gaston Jaunsolo, the spokesman for the Uruguayan navy told Reuters. He added that the ship split in two and sank. The two rescued men told Uruguayan authorities that the captain alerted the crew that "water was entering" and that the ship was breaking. The cause of the problem is not yet known. "It was not a complicated day for navigation," Jaunsolo told AFP. Indications of a sinking The navy had earlier said in a statement: "A ship observed an oil sheen and debris, in addition to smelling a strong petroleum odour, which indicates that the stricken vessel has sunk." Four merchant vessels and a Brazilian military aircraft are also participating in the search. Polaris Shipping executives authorised to speak on the sinking were unavailable to comment because they were in "emergency stations", a person who answered the phone at the company's Seoul headquarters told TradeWinds. The Marshall Islands-flagged Stellar Daisy is classed by the Korean Register of Shipping and has protection-and-indemnity cover from Steamship Mutual. Με αφορμή το ατύχημα, ο ναυλωτής του πλοίου(Vale) σταμάτησε να ναυλώνει πλοία παρόμοιου παρελθόντος και αναλόγου ηλικίας. Αυτό λέγεται πως έδωσε ένα καλό rally στην αγορά του South Atlantic με συνέπεια ειδικά τα panamax να δούν νούμερα για fronthaul που δεν είχαν δεί για πάααααρα πολύ καιρό. Άλλη βρώμα της αγοράς αναφέρει πως έτερο πλοίο πλοικτησίας των Κορεατών της Polaris(που όποιος έχει δουλέψει μαζί τους, του έχει μείνει αξέχαστο), αναγκάστηκε να προσεγγίσει τη Νότιο Αφρική εκτάκτως, λίγες μέρες μετά το παραπάνω ατύχημα, ώστε να επισκευάσει κάποιο crack που είχε παρατηρηθεί καθ' οδόν από τη Βραζιλία σε ανάλογο ταξίδι με το Stellar Daisy.
