My Ferry Link (MFL), the new cross-Channel operator run by formerSeaFrance employees and owned by Eurotunnel, today launched the maiden voyage of its new Calais-Dover service.
Sister-ships Berlioz and Rodin, two of the three ferries left defunct after the demise of SeaFrance, both began operating on the route today, where they will be joined by the Nord-Pas-de Calais, the third formerSeaFrance vessel purchased by Eurotunnel later this year.
MFL’s new cross-Channel service, which has create around 200 jobs for the UK and France, will provide passengers with four daily crossings to France.
The decision to award Eurotunnel with the three former SeaFrance vessels, which paved the way for the launch of the new service, was met with fierce criticism by rival operators P&O Ferries and DFDS Seaways, who argue that Eurotunnel now has an unfair share of the already competitive Dover Strait.
The matter is currently being investigated by the UK’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
However, the Port of Dover today welcomed the return the Berlioz, Rodin and Nord-pas de Calais back to the port.

In a ceremony at the port this morning, Tim Waggott, director of business and support services at the Port of Dover presented Jean-Michel Giguet, chief executive of My Ferry Link, with a plaque in honor of the inaugural channel crossings of the Berlioz and Rodin under the new MFL brand.
“We warmly welcome the three vessels back to the Port of Dover and congratulate My Ferry Link on their new venture,” said Waggott.

λεγεται) του UK, απαγορευει στη My Ferry Link (δηλαδη στο Eurotunnel), να προσεγγιζουν τα Belrioz & Rodin στο dover, για τα επομενα δυο χρονια.

The Competition Commission said that Eurotunnel's move was motivated by concerns that Danish ferry operator DFDS Seaways would buy the vessels cheaply and drive down prices for customers. The other operator on the Dover-Calais crossing is P&O Ferries.

"It cannot be good for competition when Eurotunnel, which already holds a market share of over 40 percent, moves into the ferry business-particularly when it did so to stop a competitor from buying the ferries," said Alasdair Smith, the Commission's deputy chairman.

"Customers would lose out from Eurotunnel increasing its share even further and being able to raise prices on the tunnel services," he said.

Tην εμπορικη εκμετταλευση ομως την εχει η θυγατρικη του eurotunnel My Ferry Link SAS (A.E.)

From InfraNews:

Channel Tunnel operator Groupe Eurotunnel will appeal against yesterday’s (6 June) decision by the UK Competition Commission (CC) that it has to stop operating ferry services from the port of Dover.

The company, which is part-owned by Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners (GSIP), said in a statement that the CC decision is "incomprehensible and seriously disproportionate", and that it "will reduce the choice of services across the Straits of Dover to the detriment of the consumer".

The CC said that its decision derives from the acquisition last year by Eurotunnel of three ferries of bankrupt ferry operator SeaFrance.

According to the CC final report, "Eurotunnel decided to acquire the SeaFrance ferries in order to prevent ferry operator DFDS/LD from buying them" as it was "concerned that if DFDS/LD obtained the assets cheaply, it could drive down prices for customers".

CC deputy chairman, Alasdair Smith, added: "It cannot be good for competition when Eurotunnel, which already holds a market share of over 40%, moves into the ferry business - particularly when it did so to stop a competitor from buying the ferries. Customers would lose out from Eurotunnel increasing its share even further and being able to raise prices on the tunnel services."

The CC has given Eurotunnel six months to comply, although the appeal effectively puts its decision on hold until a court decides on the process.

Back in business:

The English Channel ferry operator MyFerryLink is set to resume its operations on the Dover-Calais route past July 9, after the UK Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to ban the company’s owners and operators Eurotunnel and SCOP from operating ferries out of Dover.

τα Berlioz & Rodin στη DFDS

Tί να πει κι η Stena :)

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-kent-33235473?ocid=socialflow_twitter

Three ferry operators and Eurotunnel services are affected.

The BBC has been told the industrial action is by MyFerryLink workers.

BBC South East reporter Simon Jones said MyFerryLink vessels were preventing other ships at Calais from moving.

'Road on fire'

Dover Harbour Board said the industrial action closed the Port of Calais in the early hours and all ferries to and from Dover were affected, apart from DFDS Seaways which was still running services to Dunkerque.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said the strike was expected to last until 20:00 French time, but the rail operator was trying to run as many trains as possible.

He said port workers had blockaded the entrance to the Eurotunnel site and in consequence there had been motorway disruption and increased migrant activity with people trying to climb on to vehicles as well as break-in attempts.

Lorry driver Chris Cary, from Rochester, said he tried to cross the Channel back to Kent in the early hours but then decided to attempt getting on a train instead.

But he said he found the road on fire as he approached the terminal with about 500-600 trucks waiting to cross and police and firefighters at the scene.

"I didn't cancel my booking this morning for P&O, so I've literally just come back to the port and I'm now sitting back on the lane where I was at 03:10 this morning waiting for a boat," he said.

Dover port has urged people travelling with DFDS Seaways, P&O and MyFerryLink to check with their operators before travelling.

But MyFerryLink tweeted: "Port of Dover severely congested. Please do not try to check in."
